If you are looking for Thai food in San Diego, you definitely have a wide array of options. My friend and I were craving Thai the other day, so we picked up our phones and started doing some hardcore Yelp research. After an agonizing 15 minutes of looking through photos of some of the best Thai food around town, we landed on Bahn Thai- a restaurant that is located in University Heights and is open from 11 a.m.- 10 p.m. Monday- Thursday, 11 a.m.- 11p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 4 p.m.-11 p.m. on Sunday.
We spent a while looking for parking, and then spent even longer in the huge line that was out the door by 6 p.m. This spot was obviously a favorite for many, and we were incredibly excited to try it out. We asked people in line what their favorite dishes were, and it seemed as though everything at this place was a local legend.
The inside of the restaurant is extremely tiny, with only a couple of tables inside. There is outdoor seating, but you should get there early if you are looking for a place to sit. After much debate, I decided on the Garlic Chicken and Shrimp Stir Fry, served with the house garlic sauce, cabbage, and green onions. My friend decided on the Beef Fried Rice, which includes tomatoes, Chinese broccoli, onions, and eggs, garnished with fresh cilantro, green onions, and a slice of cucumber. The staff was extremely friendly and the service was fast and efficient.
All of their dishes come on paper plates, served steaming hot and piled high. It was love at first bite with my garlic stir fry, and I finished up that plate in less than ten minutes. It was a huge portion, but I could not stop eating. Garlic is my weakness- it was mixed in perfectly and the paired onions and cabbage made it extra tasty. I was incredibly full afterwards and had to spend at least 20 minutes digesting, but it was well worth it.
Bahn Thai did not disappoint, and I will most definitely be coming back for more. Thai thank you from the bottom of my heart.
