The Inside Scoop on Salt and Straw

Who doesn’t love ice cream? Memories of chasing down the ice cream man, eating various flavors by the spoonful and straight out of the carton, combined with my childhood mission to try all 31 flavors are truly part of who I have become today… an unofficial Salt and Straw stalker.

Salt and Straw is an ice cream shop that originated in Portland, Oregon. With humble beginnings that have launched them into vast success, Salt and Straw has locations in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, L.A. and thankfully, San Diego. Their dedication to creating innovative, delicious and sometimes wonderfully eccentric flavors, has made them a true staple in the ice cream scene.

With a location in Little Italy and a new addition in Del Mar, the San Diego locations are home to the sweet smell of freshly made waffle cones and some quirky flavors. Each month, Salt and Straw releases specialty flavors, which is a monthly email I look forward to opening. Currently, August is featuring the Farmer’s Market series. Flavors include: Carrot Cake Batter and Pralined Hazelnuts, Freckled Chocolate Zucchini Bread, Caramel Corn on the Cob, Green Fennel and Maple and Tomato and Strawberry Sorbet, a Vegan option. This is definitely not your average 31 flavors.

While the flavors seem eccentric and sometimes a little intimidating, they manage to cultivate and create something that tastes delicious even though you wouldn’t think it to be possible (I’m looking at you Tomato and Strawberry Sorbet). The welcoming staff, opportunity to sample every single flavor and the consistent amusement park esque line outside of the door, say it all! In addition to the monthly specialty flavors, the Classics menu has drool-worthy favorites such as Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache, Chocolate Gooey Brownie (my personal favorite) and more.

My new ice cream mission in life? Visiting all of the Salt and Straw locations of course!
